Besides the fact that a repeated mistake at some point becomes a choice, this value empowers us to take risks and encourages our commitment to continuous learning and improvement as professionals.

In today’s world, learning and improving aren’t tied to institutional education. (Though you can take free online courses at universities like Harvard and Yale.) The other side of that is people and businesses can share their knowledge. I’ve learned how to use apps and software at work, as well as how to fix my car on YouTube. It’s incredible how much content is available.

576,000 hours’ worth of content is uploaded daily to YouTube alone.*

That doesn’t account for all the comments on those posts. And don’t forget about all the other content sites: group chats, Reddit threads, Slack channels, and other places where people share information. There may be more trolling than teaching, but I’ve certainly learned new information from resources left in comment threads.

I think this hyper-connected world is amazing. However, there is plenty to be concerned about in terms of privacy and security. You might have heard about Facebook’s recent… situation.

Among the many issues on the internet (especially social media), there are two things that continue to bother me as a #CommsNerd:

1.       Grammar, spelling, etc.
2.       Word choice

That’s the short version of why I started the Word Choice Wednesday vlog series– to address my pet peeves. Equally a motivating factor, analyzing language is a big part of my job. The average person may not notice such an error right away, but I hope this vlog will help folks make new mistakes.

And don’t worry, I am not above making mistakes. It happens. In fact, I put myself to task in a recent episode of Word Choice Wednesday. See below:

I’ve learned to be more forgiving when it comes to grammar, especially in verbal communication. Because the words you choose drastically impact how your message lands with your audience, even if you use proper grammar. Use the tip in this video when you’re giving feedback:

That’s a positive example, but what about when our words cause harm? Are there larger societal implications for using negative words? Think about that as you watch this video questioning why we use violent verbs in sales. 

I was thrilled when I found out that National Words Matter Week is a thing – an initiative that encourages us to think about the impact that our words have on other people. That’s what really matters!
